What does it take to be an archeologist?

Judging from the postings, at least Indy Magnoli and Nitzsche are archeologists.. Myself I was thinking abt becoming one, but changed my course towards business school for now.
I'd like people to tell what it takes to become an archeologist (particular universities, dead languages, etc.) and what the occupation is like overall.
Thanks guys! Who knows maybe the extinguished flame will light up again ;-)
