Actually, I always like the fact that he was a very flawed hero.

He wasn't a great judge of character (ie. his ally trying to shoot him in the back, SA 1936); he was always getting his ass kicked, yet persisted; he wasn't very good with the ladies- to Lucas' dismay; and he was more than capable of making mistakes.
