Possible that the smudge wasn't visible in the TV version because it was Pan-And-Scan (4:3) as opposed to theatrical ratio (2:35:1 if I remember correctly)?

As for the bird, I'm pretty sure it's a Raven, hence the bar's name. It looks pretty black to me, so it must be...
