: I haven't read The Hobbit yet, but wasn't Smaug killed in the end of the story?

If memory serves me correctly, I think he was (it's been a while since I've read The Hobbit, although I just recently found the books in my house again :) ).
Of course, Smaug's emergence could be explained by any number of different reasons: perhaps the rupture is playing with time, or perhaps Sauron (i.e. the Evil One) has something to do with it, or perhaps Tolkein simply "fudged" the story a bit when he wrote the books for readers in our world (writing that Smaug had died when he really 'disappeared' or something... a "History is written by the victors" sort of thing)? :)
A creative explanation can be found, I'm sure. :D
