: Of course, Smaug's emergence could be explained by any number of different reasons: perhaps the rupture is playing with time, or perhaps Sauron (i.e. the Evil One) has something to do with it, or perhaps Tolkein simply "fudged" the story a bit when he wrote the books for readers in our world (writing that Smaug had died when he really 'disappeared' or something... a "History is written by the victors" sort of thing)? :)
