: I have been following closely the discussion about the Ark in the movie. I think that the treatment of the Grail was a little questionable, but that is neither here nor there.
: However, in all of the mythology I have read (and admitedly, I haven't read a lot of early Indian, Vedic or Hindu mythology) I have never come across a reference to the legend described by Indy in ToD. Is there really a legend of Sankara the prophet, and his five sacred stone for fighting evil?
Hey. Good question. But with upwards of 20 million gods in Hindu
theology (I hesitate to label it simply a "mythology"), tracking down
a single legend would be difficult to say the least. Sankara himself
was a character in Hindu stories. His parents (who were unable to
conceive) made a pilgrimage to Trichur, where they found a shrine to
Siva. Siva made them a deal: they could either have multitudes of sons,
or one son with very special abilities. They chose the latter, and
their son Sankara became a Solomon-esque wise man and teacher. In
case you are wondering, I work in a research library, and I came across
a book on Hindu legends. I hope I have enlightened you.
my two cents.
