What are some of the thing you have used your whips for?

I had a question for those who own whips.Indy Jones in the movies alot of times uses his whip in self-defense grabbing guns,swords, or just scaring away enemies. I would be interested in reading a real life story where the whip was used for protection. Because even though I think that there cool, and I would like to have one I can't see myself forking out the hundreds of dollars for a whip when I don't know what I would be able to use it for other than having a cool indy replica item. So if you have any stories where the whip came in handy I'd be interested to read about it. Thanks
