Are there any methods that can be used to prevent hat shrinkage?

I know a few. Dont wet them with warm water, dont dry a wet hat via heat source. What others can be used? Can I use scotch Guard to prevent water from soaking too deep into the hat with fur felt? I have used Camp Dry etc. on a wool hat. Can it be used on fur?
