Yes, it's hard ot come by a more customer-friendly hatmaker than Joe, Jr. And it's a mighty nice hat. I really wanted to like my Herbert Johnson but I was so disappointed in the shoddy workmanship I probably won't wear it much anyway.

Of course if you follow one certain individual's faulty logic on this forum and you decide to plunk down $300 for the HJ, make sure you SPECIFY IN ADVANCE that you DON'T want it with an off-center crease, you DON'T want the bow tacked on crookedly to the side of the hat, and you DON'T want corners on the edges of the brim. This guy would have you believe that if you don't specify every possible flaw that you don't want on a hat then it's not the hatmaker's fault he does a crappy job. Come to think of it, if you don't want it with little propeller on top, you better tell Mr. Swayles in advance or it's your fault.

: Talked today to Joe Peters about why his hats are so stiff. He told me that the hats are soaked in a compound that stiffens the hat to the "bullet proof" stiffness. He said he does this in order to make the hat more durable and better for rain wear (actually for all types of weather pretty much). We also talked about the HJ fedora. Though he has never seen one himself, Joe notes that that hat seems very soft to him when viewing the movies and from what he hears from others. He thinks the HJ is one you use for display and dressing up purposes while his is more of an everyday wear one which will last.
: Very nice man to talk with, and lets his work and his customers do his talking for him. Along with Cueball I think this hat is probably the better of the Indy hats. Thanks for all of your help, I'm off to buy me a hat.
