Trouble with sound on Fate of Atlantis game

I just got a copy of this game I bought on eBay. Everytime I try to use it with sound voice/music set, it says it committed some illegal operation in Windows. It works fine without the sound enabled. Can anyone explain this to a computer technical illiterate so I can have it work with sound. I'm running Windows 98 in a Compaq, with a Yamaha synthesizer.
