CGI cost...

The "looks as good" part is a matter of opinion, as I believe it often looks fantastic (Mummy 2 was an exception, though.). But about the cost? I don't think CGI actually is more expensive than other methods. I'm basing this off Mars Attacks!: The (IMO) excellent looking CGI aliens in there were done by CGI because of one reason: budget. Tim Burton wanted to use claymation or models, but it would have put him way over budget.
