I looked up pith in the dictionary "soft spongy tissue in the center of certain plant stems" - cork- about a half inch thick. The tag on the old hat says "polo helmet"- Must be protection from polo balls and mallets. Were they adapted from adventure to polo or visa-versa? Here's what the modern ones look like...
