Cork is a first-rate insulator and is also used as an environmentally friendly filler material in construction. Old corks from wine bottles are ground up and... need I go on? ;)
Anyway, a light cork helmet should make an excellent lid in high temps. Maybe you could make a cork fedora? Use finely ground cork (throw the corks in a blender), mix with a putty (how about that Micro Ballon stuff they sell as an extremely light filler for balsa wood. It can easily be sanded and painted!).
That's crazy, you say? I think not! ;)

: I looked up pith in the dictionary "soft spongy tissue in the center of certain plant stems" - cork- about a half inch thick. The tag on the old hat says "polo helmet"- Must be protection from polo balls and mallets. Were they adapted from adventure to polo or visa-versa? Here's what the modern ones look like...
