It's true, the original illustrations in Strand magazine show Holmes in a very different light than we are accustomed to, or as he's portrayed in popular culture. I prefer the original concepts of him myself. Those illustrations seem much more true to Doyle's description. I'm familiar with the story of speckled band, but when did he use a riding crop graml? Is that what he knocked the snake down with after charging into the room at the last minute?
